Heroes in a halfshell, put in a half made game

This game was a great idea. It is basically a take on the popular smash bros, but it managed to miss nearly all the elements that made Smash bros good.

For one, the character movement, actions, response seems to be EXTREMELY slow, and often choppy at times.

The stage Variety 'kind-of' works, but the stages are not put together too well it seems.

The only thing this game managed to do what take a popular franchise and turn it into about 20 mins of fun. If youre looking for a game thats fun like this, Smash Bros is cheaper, and has more hours of gameplay.

I would suggest copying Power-Stone 2 OR Bleech... would make for an interesting game
Not Smash, but surprisingly fun

A lot of reviewers have compared Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and I think the comparison is pretty good. The gameplay feels a lot like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, even going so far as incorporating strong "A button" moves. I think if you like Smash and want more, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up would be a good addition.

A lot of reviewers have criticized this game for not having a lot of characters. I think there's some truth to that, but not a whole lot. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up does have fewer characters initially, but there are at least some secret characters. Also, let's remember that Super Smash Bros. Brawl had more characters, but less than half were even decent and most were lousy. Whenever I played with my friends, we tended to only use about 3 characters each. Frankly, adding a bunch of Jigglypuffs to the character roster did not really do much for me. By contrast, with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up, I get the sense that most of the characters are roughly equivalent and good to play with.

This game also has a few innovations not seen in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I like the stages a lot better. More room to fight, as well as more interaction between the stage and the characters. In one stage, a giant alligator will eat your character if you're not careful. Also, the characters can hang onto walls.

At the end of the day, is this game as good as Super Smash Bros. Brawl? Probably not. Smash was unique, like a first love. However, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up is fun in its own right and worth trying if you want more Smash-style playing or different characters.
Unrealized Potential

Reviewer: Bruce Wayne,
Although the fighting mechanics are solid and the multiplayer modes are fun enough for some laid back action. The guts of TMNT is left under utilized. With such a rich history of characters, heroes and villains, TMNT only gives you the bare essentials. The roster is thin with little interest besides the titualr 4 turtles. You get Splinter, Shredder, April and Casey Jones. And a handful of unknowns who will seem alien to fans of the classic TV show. Left on the outs are Bebop, Rocksteady, Rat King, Baxter Stockman, Leatherhead, Krang etc. Such missed potential.
What is there is solid enough for a fun round of couch Turtle fighting. The graphics are polished and the Turtles specifically are nicely animated with great looking levels to play on. Overall it's a great concept for a game that loses it's mojo somewhere along the way. If all you need to have fun are Leo, Mike, Raph and Don then you'll get a fun package. For fans of the show, you might be wise to wait for the sequel.
Worth $20, not worth $50

Reviewer: Mal,
I bought this game on the release day, full of anticipation as a life long Turtles fan, especially of the 80's cartoon series.

Initially I was extremely disappointed, due to the poor character roster (which included no characters exclusive to the 80's cartoon), horrible story for single player mode, and UbiSoft's general refusal to acknowledge the disappointment among the fan base (they STILL haven't change the Smash Up website, which lists 7 question marks under the characters when only the 3 Rabbids are left).

However, several months later I've finally decided to write a review, having played the game a bit more and gotten over my initial frustrations. It's really not a bad fighting game, almost like Smash Bros' Lite. Sure, the 1-player story mode is horrendously lacking, and the character variety still isn't interesting. But the levels are mostly well designed, and online play is surprisingly smooth (a sad rarity for a Wii game).

If you have Smash Bros. Brawl already, there is no reason to buy this as that is superior in almost every way. But for the current price of $20, Ninja Turtles: Smash Up is a worthwhile purchase for anyone looking for a fighting game for their Wii.

So to sum up: Worth $20 if you don't own Smash Bros., not worth $50 under any circumstances (not nearly enough content).
Not quite a missed oppurtunity, but definitely could've been better

Reviewer: Vincent Vazquez,
To be succint, this is exactly what you think it is. A great Super Smash Bros. clone featuring the TMNT license. Don't be fooled that there are no direct ties to Imagi's excellent 2007 CG film - it's clearly based on that universe. And it's largely a successful game - if you like Smash, you'll dig TMNT Smash Up. Especially since it's less hectic and more skill based.

The problem with this game is content. It runs out of interesting stuff FAR too quickly. The roster is pathetic, and the stages are mostly annoying or out-of-place (a western town? What the...). There are a bunch of mini games, but that'd be like buying Street Fighter IV for the car smashing bonus round. Also, online is both broken and there's no community there anyway, so don't count on extending your replay value that way. Like most reviews stated, this definitely should've incorporated content from THROUGHOUT the 25-year history of the Turtles. How about characters like Bebop and Rocksteady? Or their "Secret of the Ooze" counterparts, Tokka and Razor? A giant Mouser? Baxter Stockman? None of them are here. It's really light on stuff. And the soundtrack blows. Considering the Turtles' have brought us such classics as Ninja Rap, T-U-R-T-L-E Power and Pizza Power, there is a NOTICEABLE lack of early 90's R&B/Hip Hop flavor to the soundtrack. It's not offensive or anything, it's just generic, unmemorable background music.

Still, it's on Amazon for, like, 8 bucks. It's definitely worth it at that price. It's a good game, just not the TMNT game you might be hoping for. Really wish Ubi Soft would've given it another shot with a sequel, but that'll never happen now. Maybe Nickelodeon's new Turtles stuff for 2011 and 2012 will re-energize the franchise, and whoever gets it next will produce the fighting game we all want. This was close, but ultimately misses the mark. And probably isn't worth it if you have Super Smash Bros. Melee or Brawl.
Pretty decent Smash Bros. clone

Take the team that worked on the million-selling, world famous Smash Bros. Brawl for wii and have them repeat the process, but only this time, use characters from the TMNT Universe. Do that and you have TMNT: Smash Up! Everything from this game will remind you of SSBB, from the different control configurations to the pre-fight announcer who tell you who tells you who you'll be facing. Even the bonus games are variations on the ones found in Smash Brothers. Is this a bad thing? Hell no! Well, not if you're a fan of that game AND a TMNT fan. The character models are great, the backgrounds varies with lots of fight-altering events popping up from time to time, and it even includes online play! I had a chance to test the wifi in a few bouts. Only once did I have a problem with really bad lag. The other times it ran smoothly. My only gripe was with the character selection, which is lacking. This is an issue because with the company celebrating 25 years of TMNT history, there's no reason the pickings should be so bland. Not to mention Ubisoft felt the need to include 3 unlockable RAVING RABBIDS. Completely unnecessary in my opinion. Although I do hear that Bebop, Rocksteady, and Leatherhead ar in there... somewhere. All in all, if you've played SSBB to death, and like TMNT, I suggest you give this one a try. On a side note, for those with a PS2 who've never played a SB game (shame!) this is the perfect opportunity to test the waters and see what that game is all about. Just imagine this game, only ten times better hehe.
Smash Up, baby!

Reviewer: Funky Winkerbean,
OK, for a third party title I'm going to go out on a limb and give this a 5. I think this is as close to perfect as we've seen in a game that wasn't specifically built by Nintendo from eth ground up to be a Wii title. The controls are superb, the levels are interesting, the action fun and the graphics are top notch for any Wii title, regardless of first party or third. This is some seriously good stuff. Beats the pants off of the last bunch of Turtles releases on any platform.
Turtles Going what they love kicking butt

This is the really second great beating up game on the Wii. Their are good one. But for the 8 to 13 years ols this one and Super Smash Bros. Braw are great for them. This takes a little from Super Smark. But leaves a little out. The replay value is great and will keep the kids glue to the console for hours. But these two on your holiday list and set a time limit or you never see your kids again for hours.

This is my first entry into a Smash Brothers-type fighting game, and I can say that my introduction was a very pleasant one. If first impressions are to be relied upon, my impression will have me returning for more in the future. The comparisons between Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Smash Up are very relevant as they share the same development team, so if you've played Smash Brothers, your learning curve on Smash Up will be very low. However, it should be said that for those who haven't played these games before, this game provides a perfect opportunity to learn the basic controls, and advanced features very quickly. The game has several game play modes, some of which assist the player in learning basic combat techniques which will be essential for successful combat. First, there is the aptly named "Practice Mode" which allows you to do just that. This mode teaches you several basic moves. For offline game play, there is a "Mission Mode" in which you need to fight a series of characters in different environments in order to complete it. This mode is interspersed with a few minigames which also help you in learning how to move quickly through environments. There are a total of six minigames in all, and when you score high enough in them in Mission mode, they become unlocked for game play at anytime. Successfully completing Mission Mode gives you the option to unlock a number of characters as well. There is an "Arcade Mode" and "Survival Mode" in which you face CPU opponents, and also "Battle Royal" and "Swap Out" modes in which you can play either CPU or friends. It should be noted that thhe Battle Royal, Swap Out, and Survival Modes can be played online though the main online feature is Tournament Mode. When playing online either you can enter a "friend code" to allow you to play a specific person (or persons) directly, or a "match up" option which will randomly pit you against a player online. Overall, the online function worked well, though I did experience lag from time to time. It's quite possible that this was a problem on my end, however I have heard of people complaining about lag on a lot of online Wii games. Whether UbiSofts servers are overtaxed, WiFi on the WIi is problematic, or it is a case-by-case problem ... I cannot tell. Like any good fighting game, how to control your characters is of great importance. Here, the developers give you four options: 1) WiiMote with Nunchuck; 2) WiiMote alone; 3) Classic Controller; and 4) Gamecube controller.

From a personal standpoint, I enjoyed this game immensely. This game definitely allows you to approach this game at your own speed. In addition to the practice/training modes, this game lets you pick your difficulty ranging from easy to "shell shocked" (five difficult settings in all). Easy is really easy, allowing you to figure out opponents and environments (some of which are highly interactive) before moving up in difficulty. The game constantly keeps you challenged as well, by recording high scores and keeping track of online win/loss records. If you are considering a fighting game, but have not entered the genre yet, this game is a good option. It has a number of unlockable characters, very good graphics, and allows you to advance at your own pace. I would highly recommend this game for anyone, and for all ages, especially those who are TMNT fans.
